Week Seven Discussion Part 2

Q Essay Two Planning Workshop: Developing Your Analysis *Please post in this discussion only AFTER you've read "Lecture: Organizing Your Analysis" and completed "Essay Two Prewriting Assignment." *I also highly recommend completing this activity BEFORE you complete your Blocking Plan. After having written your prewriting, you should have a good sense of the ad you're analyzing, the text you'll be using, and the connections between the two. However, advertisements are dense, carefully constructed pieces of media. Even when they appear simple, there are a lot of subtle details packed into them that contribute to its appeal to the viewer. It's easy to miss some aspect of the ad the might be important for analysis. Therefore, you're going to get another student's perspective on the ad and how it employs the strategies in the text you're using. You should use the feedback you receive in this discussion as you're developing your Prewriting into your Blocking Plan and Rough Draft. In this discussion activity, you will share your advertisement, the ideas from Fowles you're using, and some early ideas about the analytical connection you're making; then a fellow student will review the ad and offer their additional insights. Your Task STEP ONE: Make your first post (12.5 points). • First, post a link to the advertisement you'll be analyzing, or just copy and paste it if that's easier. If the ad isn't online, you could take a picture of it and post it. If you're struggling to post the ad in some form, just write a description of it. (You could use a description like this in the intro to your essay anyway.) • Please find your own ad. Please don't use any of the ads that I have posted in class for your essay or this activity. We're interested in your own, original analysis. • Next, provide a brief overview of your analysis. o Explain the main ideas from Fowles you'll be using in your analysis. o Then explain the connections you established in your prewriting: ? What two or three specific elements of the ad will you focus on in your analysis? ? What are the connections between these elements of the ad and the strategies described in the text? ("The music and lyrics in the advertisement contribute to the ad's overall strategy of appealing to what Fowles describes as the need for escape because...") STEP TWO: Respond to someone else's post (12.5 points). *PLEASE RESPOND TO SOMEONE WHO HASN'T BEEN RESPONDED TO YET. IF POSSIBLE, PLEASE AVOID REPLYING TO SOMEONE WHO HAS ALREADY RECEIVED A REPLY. Start by viewing your classmate's ad, looking at it closely, and thinking about it critically and analytically. Then read their summary of their analysis. Finally, answer the following questions about your classmate's analysis. • Is the connection between the ad and the text clear? Is it evident to you that the ad really does use the appeal/s from Fowles your classmate has chosen? Are there any other appeals that seem like they'd be useful in analyzing this advertisement? • What are some other important details in the advertisement that your partner missed in their original analysis? What other, perhaps subtle, things are going on in the ad that seem to connect to the appeal/s?
